Konichiwa weebs! After the hyper success of Isekai animes around the world, newer Isekai animes are hitting screens like never before. Re:Zero is no different to this phenomena. It is of the most viewed anime of 2016 in the whole world.
Just take a look at the Crunchyroll stats below!! What do you see? Numerous anime fans across the world have watched this anime. Which tells us that Re:Zero has a rather amazing tale, to surprise us with.
With its amazing Isekai, time warping theme and unique, liquid fluid animation Re:Zero is really awesome. The anime plays around dark psychological elements with an upbeat fantasy setting. With all of the love triangle between the characters and the dark elements, we have shown great character growth and kinship. There is a lot of focus in the setting of the story and the character kinship. If you haven’t watched it already, what are you waiting for? And those who did, here are some as amazing anime like Re:Zero
7. The Rising of the Shield Hero
- Episodes: 25
- Premiered : Winter 2019
- Studio: Kinema Citrus
- Mal Score: 8.38
Naofumi Iwatani the protagonist like in every other isekai anime was just your not-so-average man, detached from the real world and was only interested in anime and manga. His life was quite “smooth-sailing“ for what he defined.
Everything changed after he took up a certain ancient book in a public library. As soon as he opened the book he was teleported to another world or should I say summoned to another world? Along with 3 other people, Naofumi happened to go to a medieval era fantasy world. They were summoned as “ great heroes” for they’d fight off waves of monsters and help prevent a disaster happening to the kingdom.
Naofumi with the other heroes soon realized that they were isekai-ed to an another world. Every hero was spawned with a specific weapon in hand and much to our protagonist’s dismay he had the most “weakest” of all, a shield! And if things couldn’t have got any worse he was even alleged to molest a girl as soon as he got into the other world and left him devoid of all assistance and supplies.
Accused of having molested a girl, from the King to even all the villagers’ everyone started defaming the protagonist which was further accompanied by more “sanctions” by the king. After such a struggle in the new world, although dead from the inside – He finally took hold of himself and started to train all by himself while the other heroes had powerful companions each.
Much after the “cultural shook” Naofumi had in the new world. It made him more woke and finally he gathered his own companions a raccoon and a chicken through SLAVE TRADE. Yeah A RACCOON AND A CHICKEN! But don’t get your hopes so low cause both the racoon and the chicken are animated by Japanese animators. They leave you with no reason to complain ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). Infact if I were to compare Rem and the Racoon then the Racoon might as well fight Rem for the best girl 😉 And yes like in ReZero, not all is well in the relationship between Naofumi, the Raccoon and the Chicken. And most of time we even get to see daughter-zoned moments XD
As the name suggests, this was just the beginning of The Rising Shield Hero. It does follow a lot of isekai tropes but later in the story it develops more into a whole new anime in itself.

Konosuba is fairly for the light-hearted. It hits you like a cold, summer breeze while in the shade. Something to entertain yourself with and not take seriously. It is everything that ReZero isn’t and that’s why it makes it into the list. If you are looking for some serious dark psychological recommendation and good plot, konosuba for one ain’t it Chief! Move ahead! There are better recommendations waiting your appraisal ahead 🙂
Konosuba has turned the whole isekai theme into an entire gag. After the hyper success of Sword Art Online isekai genre MANY anime studios started adapting mangas and light novels revolving around isekai themes while having the same usual tropes, Re:Zero had a similar story to share if not the same plot. Konosuba for a change puts every other isekai genres into a nutshell. It’s like a parody of all isekai animes. Just like how Hopsin made a parody on all mumble rappers through mumble rap and ended up topping the rap charts. Konosuba was just an anime example of this.
It’s silly sense of humor and how the characters are in particular puts the anime to just another level while being an isekai in itself. The main character Subaru isn’t any super strong OP character with an Excalibur. While his companions are super strong divas they tend to have a little flaws in themselves like how he has a literal level 100 goddess in his side but she has an amazing IQ of -100, he even has a real rich; thicc; super strong sword’s girl ( A Tank! ) but here again she never fails to miss the target ( emphasize on “ miss the target “ ) and he even has a loli Megumin who by the next season is going to get legal and she literally has that one level 100 explosion that she can only use once a day ( which she many-a-times uses on level 1 enemies only to pass out later ). And Subaru in himself is useless in combat who also happens to be the leader of the party aiming to defeat the demon lord.
This show is so cliche that it’s anti-cliched and has Cabbages! A lot of them and its fun ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) And again, it is everything what ReZero isn’t and that’s what makes it so watchable. Such silly contradictions are quite fun to the real deal. Highly Recommended!
5. No Game No Life
- Episodes: 12
- Premiered : Spring 2014
- Studio: Madhouse
- Mal Score: 8.38
Different from ReZero, in No Game, No Life the protagonists Shiro and Sora are a bunch of neets siblings who voluntarily travel to the other world after defeating a god in a chess match online. They get summoned to a world where a game decides everything and where no bloodshed and wars are fought. Every decision is made through games from business to territorial conquests. Everything! Even love.
The story mainly focuses on Sora and Shiro, both being highly intellectual. While Sora is a very charismatic and intelligent person. His victory is always assured from the very beginning of any game. Not that he is sinistic like lelouch or Light but sometimes quite perverted. On the other hand, Shiro at first glance would only seem like a fan service loli.
But then again if you look at her closely and give the show a time then you would be shook to see what a badass Shiro is in herself. Her brain is an anime adaptation of a supercomputer, she has a logical thinking above 9000!!! XD and has a data storage capacity more than my computer. Those two makes the two sides of a perfectly polished coin. The entire story is how both the siblings go out on the hopes of conquering the entire realm through games.
The anime is intelligent and knows what it is getting into. Although slow paced, the anime has won many hearts around the world. A product of the legendary Madhouse, NGNL is an excellent anime. While ReZero has its dark psychological genre in itself, NGNL has its share of psychological warfare if not dark.
Basically the two siblings are One Punch Man but wait not Strong only Intelligent. Super Intelligent! The anime with its amazing neon art takes you with awe and you for one would surely enjoy it if you loved Re:Zero. The anime keeps you wanting more.
4. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
- Episodes: 14
- Premiered : Spring 2006
- Studio: Kyoto Animation
- Mal Score: 7.99
The anime is circling around an ignorant supreme being. That being can mend time and space all through the will of the mind. Although unaware of the powers, whatever the being imagined turns into a reality and when that same being is sad or angry, dangerous things are bound to happen on earth. And no, the being doesn’t think any “ normal “ stuff but is only fascinated with crazy stuff like aliens, espurs and time travellers. This leads to a result of occurrences where many such species are existent in real life. While many of them are trying to please the supreme being, many aren’t without the supreme being knowing.
Our protagonist, a male lead is an average high school human. He not knowing how complex the world he is living in, lives a good life. Much of that change when he encounters a girl from his class who drags him into a school club. The club with 4 members – A middle schooler who loves books, a very likeable character with very womanly charms and a charismatic, good looking blonde boy. Eventually the MC himself joins the club for the girl who dragged him in was the leader.
Much after that he soon figures out not everything is well in the club in fact nothing is well in the club. Apart from him and the girl being humans none of the other members are “ normal “. They were at most a result of the supreme being’s imagination and the reality he is living in is nothing more of an imagination in itself. And that supreme being is none other than the leader of the club – Haruhi Suzumiya.
This anime is definitely not for everyone! You either love it or hate it. The characters are a result of different imaginations and reality & time is not in existence. The story is about how the club members prevent Haruhi from thinking irrationally and changing the entire time and space again and again. Many a times they live a same day over and over. Impressively enough you could also watch the anime in two different ways > The chronological way and the broadcast way. Both make equal sense and different endings.

Losing a beloved person would certainly leave any person stricken with grief and confusion: self-condemnation and thoughts of preventing such death are things that would cross anyone’s mind. Luckily in the case Boku Dake Inai Machi, or Erased in its english title, the protagonist Satoru Fujinuma finds himself able to travel back in time to prevent such tragedy from happening; furthermore, he is set back at the time where a classmate died.
This is not everything: the mystery surrounding the death of the girl also seems to be tied to that of his very own family. Erased is a psychological mystery anime that portrays human drama, yet sadly was disappointed, being the characters and numerous plot holes the main culprits. However, it must be mentioned that it has a great direction in animation and a good buildup in the first few episodes, which arguably was enthralling, pulling viewers into the show.
Erased is a story of how a guy lost in a shell of darkness revisiting time to save his loved ones.
2. When They Cry: Kai
- Episodes: 26 + 24
- Premiered : Spring 2016
- Studio: Studio Deen
- Mal Score: 8.07
Watching When They Cry : Kai is difficult for the viewer. You should be ready for the worst – Blood, Blood and MORE BLOOD. It’s like locking a group into a chamber and only to open it later to see everything has turned into a murderous mess. Also doing it over and over. Everyone, everything has a different side to themselves. It’s shocking, its horrific, and yet it is a part of you, cannot help but wonder, how did it happen?
The curiosity takes you over and you repeat the same scene many a times each time getting closer to the “ truth “. Everytime you think it cannot get worse, it gets worse. The story divides itself into several arcs much like many recommendations over here, each having a different view while taking you closer to the “ truth “. Every arc you know something real bad is going to happen but you don’t know what. Even the sweetest flower ( character ) in the bunch can turn into a group butchering devil.
This series will leave you with every part of you guessing and it doesn’t get boring. The complexity and suspense in the grand scale with different arcs having the same outcome make it closer to what ReZero is. With its stellar storyline, the anime keeps you wanting more. Everytime its incomplete. As said before, the entire storyline is full of suspense and tension which keeps every viewer in their edge of their seats.
The story makes us sympathize with the main character’s life which is constantly at risk for him befriending seemingly murderous girls. There are many arcs which we experience in Hinamizawa through Keiichi’s eyes. Many of the arcs seem unrelated at first but the second season ties them up pretty well. The intricate plot carries an extremely heart-warming underlying theme of the importance of friendship and shows us what could happen if no trust and friendship exist in the world we live today.
A masterpiece of its kind.
1. Steins Gate
- Episodes: 24
- Premiered : Spring 2011
- Studio: White Fox
- Mal Score: 9.13
Without spoiling anything the story is about a self-proclaimed mad scientist Okabe. Who makes near crazy inventions along with a group of 2 Daru and Mayuri. And one other member Kurisu who joins the organization later. They play around a phone microwave which turn bananas into a green fluid only to realise that they made a scientific breakthrough. Which puts their lives into a great danger. Hence for the sake of the world and the people around the hero, they play around time for the greater good only to realise it is only getting worse and what they achieved is half of what the dangers are created ahead. The story is tragic yet amazing and it makes you want more, the every other episode. This anime is a piece of amazing art, rare and complex!
Re:Zero and Steins Gate is alike to each other. Both experiments with time while having a dark atmosphere around it with a lil’ sense of humor in the beginning. And so are both the anime series made by the same studio – White Fox.
In Fact Steins;Gate even goes on to put Re:Zero to shame with an overall outstanding plot, art, sound, characters and at last entertainment. The anime is super intelligent and logical, everything is put together very well. Much like in ReZero, Steins;Gate in itself has a lot of time jumps, numerous time recycles, repeats, do overs, and reboots for the “ Greater good “ of the world and the people around him.
It carefully depicts the hero’s feelings when he has to resume his interpersonal relationships and rebuild what was there before while also keeping the various circumstances in mind. Steins gate isn’t as just a generic time traveling show like :but even better than that. It’s somewhat complex yet amazing plot keeps everyone at their edge of their seats. The pace of the anime is outstanding and piece by piece it puts everything all together into a masterpiece..
I hope you liked all these 7 anime like Re:Zero. Did I miss your favorite one? Please leave a comment below – and I will try to add it!!
